Among the former are concessionaires and trade associations, while the latter often include both lay and religious not-for-profit associations whose aim is to protect citizens from risks such as gambling addiction, usury and racketeering. This expansion has resulted in an animated debate between the advocates and opponents of gambling. The transformation of gambling into a mainstream leisure activity goes along with the «colonization» of the social imaginary by images and symbols related to hazard products, which are at the same time promoted through advertisements and sold in ubiquitous and easily accessible shops. In many countries gambling has been progressively legalized over the past decades and has generated an ever-expanding industry able to influence state policy. However, there has been pressure from the gaming industry and within academic literature to reinterpret what constitutes a game of chance, and whether games of chance are harmful to the public, as opposed to games of skill. In most states, betting, within the context of a game of chance, as well as bookmaking, is an illegal activity. State and federal courts have had to decide on the regulatory nature of these activities, as well as reinterpret applicable legislation in light of the new activities. Legal developments followed the growth of this market. A number of commercial internet-based businesses followed, such as sports bets and online poker tournaments, gaining market share quickly as the internet became more widespread. At least partially responsible for this surge in interest is a series of developments in the gaming and betting markets notably, fostered by the advent of the internet, the 1990’s saw the emergence of what would become a substantial and thriving market for those providing platforms facilitating sports bets. The discourse over gaming has flourished within both the debate over public policy and the application of legal analysis. Introduction: The activities of gambling and sports betting have received special attention in recent years, especially within the areas of criminal and regulatory law. We argue that the male characterization of gamblers in the Hong Kong movies might as well be a crystallization of public fantasies and wishes. Further, the particular cultural and social conditions of Hong Kong society in each decade may have significant bearings on cultural characterization of male heroes. Psychological analysis of the characters portrayed in the Hong Kong movies suggests a shift of the emphasis from the moral integrity and social responsibility to the individual pursuit of monetary gains as the dominant theme of the movie and a component of the characterization of the protagonists. Out of such criteria, six male actors, each representing a legend at their times, were selected in the current analysis. The criteria for selection of the films were as follows: the movies in which the protagonists are portrayed by well known Hong Kong actors that attracted a wide spectrum of the audience in the community. A total of nine Hong Kong films with gambling themes were selected for analysis. This study aims to investigate the characterization of male gamblers in popular Hong Kong movies in the past 50 years.
